I remember very well the day that I delved into the mysteries of my menstrual cycle. I was about 14 years old, and, despite the fact that most of my friends already had their menstruation, for me it was all a surprise. There was a lot of curiosity, so much fear, doubt, discomfort, but above all things, I remember the feeling of shame. For some reason, without anyone to tell me anything, I felt and I accepted without question that my menstruation was a taboo subject, and that I should be ashamed if I staining and the others what they noticed.
My experience with the menstrual cup
Maybe some feel identified with this that I tell you. In fact, it would not be unlikely that it was so, because this idea of “the impurity of our menstrual blood” is very deeply rooted in our collective unconscious. A long time ago we allow, for some reason that escapes me, that we arrebataran our life is cyclical. We deliver our power and leave us convinced that being a woman is a punishment and a sin.
Perhaps many still think that, and they’re in their right. But, if you will allow me, I’d like to recommend a book: “red Moon” Miranda Gray. One night, sitting on a terrace in Barcelona, a friend of the soul shared with me part of the wisdom of this book. Me drawing on a napkin or on a slip of paper that found this image:
Cycle of red moon. Miranda Gray.
Within me resonated with the idea that this was a wonderful gift, containing in its simplicity, the key to a life more happy and fulfilling for all women.
What is the meaning of this image?
This is the so-called “Cycle of the red moon”. In it, using the symbolic image of the moon, shows the 4 general phases of our menstrual cycle. I will try to explain briefly what it is, but I recommend you to read the book:
In search of a new spirituality
1. Phase of the new Moon (archetype of “The Witch”)
Our cycle begins on the first day of bleeding, and with this we enter the first phase, symbolised in the lower part of the image for the new moon. This stage usually lasts for 3 to 5 days, is a time of “death” and introspection, here closes one cycle and begins another. Do you imagine how it would change our vision of these days if we could understand them as a moment of liberation incredible, where we leave behind all the old, to welcome the new? It is in this phase where the woman can contact with your dark, cold and receptive, that many deny. We have the gift to die and be reborn each month, and we tend not to take advantage of it.
It would be very appropriate to rest a lot at this stage, to sleep and dream and meditate. However, our society requires us to live these days the same way that the other, which will cause a lot of fatigue and irritation (do I sound?).

2. Phase of the crescent moon (archetype of the “Virgin mary”)
The next stage is the stage of rebirth after the death, here the woman’s body starts preparing to bring forward a new egg. It is a dynamic stage and radiant, as this is the moment in which the woman is freed of its cycle procreative and focuses only on his own self. We tend to feel confident in us and need to socialize. The concentration and the ambition to become stronger, so that it is at this stage of the cycle where the woman can focus more on your work. The sexuality in this stage tends to be fresh and playful. Some stagnate at this stage and try to (unnaturally) live in a way that linear (or constant) under this energy. What that gives as a result a woman hipersociable, hipertrabajadora, disconnected from her more maternal and empathetic, and also of its dark side, from which they are fleeing constantly.
3. Phase of the full moon (archetype of “The Mother”)
This phase begins around ovulation, so that your energy will be more in line with the self-sacrifice and care of others, both related to maternity. There is usually less interest by itself and, instead, it shows more the need of taking on responsibilities and “feed” projects and ideas that already exist. The sexuality of the woman at this stage usually manifests as an experience of deep love and the desire to share. If you pay attention, you may also note that at this stage people are looking for more of his help and support.
A woman who is sealed in this phase of your cycle you will have many problems to say no, and easily fall into the trap of becoming a “doormat human” in order not to lose the love of their loved ones.
4. Phase of the waning moon (archetype of “The Sorceress”)
At this stage, the egg has already been released and has not been fertilized. Then begins in women a need to deepen on the side innermost of his being. This is a stage of great creativity, where you can take advantage of the energy that the woman builds up each month to create a new life in her womb, to make art or to explore other types of creative expression. Tends to decrease your ability of concentration and your tolerance for the mundane, but it grows your intuition and your ability to dream.
First menstruation: when does it appears and how you live today?
This stage is the most common, it often gives “problems”, since here the woman is faced with the idea unaware of not having been fertilized and with the conscious idea of who is coming the time of the bleeding (the “dirty” cycle). Therefore, it is not surprising that premenstrual syndrome is something so typical today. The resistance lives within each woman in this stage is very large, and tends to bring alterations such as swelling, pain, irritability, emotionality overwhelmed, etc
And then the cycle start again, only this time since we know each other a little better, and the next a little more… until we become experts of ourselves.
Why in the menstrual cycle lies our power?
Cycles Universal are the rhythm of life itself. Everything in our world, in our Galaxy, even our Universe has cycles. All are sacred. What would happen if the Earth stopped spinning around the Sun? What if the water were to stop evaporating? What would happen if our bodies stop decomposing? What would happen if we let it die?
How you can connect with your sacred cycle?
An idea that I got from the book was to make a journal. In it I wrote how I felt each day, physically, mentally and emotionally and even that I had dreamed of that night. It is super helpful to begin to recognize the cyclicality of our states. Suddenly, I realize that every day 1 of my cycle I felt a certain way physically, or that the days 7 and 8 of my cycle I used to dream a lot, or that I feel very emotionally vulnerable such-and-such day. These data help a lot to understand and to re-connect with ourselves. We can stop judging and stop feel some hysterical because we understand as the phase of our cycle can influence us. And about all the things one can learn to respect themselves, to feel that it’s okay if such day is not want to get out of bed or the other makes you want to eat a whole bar of chocolate.
Another thing that tends to help a lot according to Miranda Gray, is to remember your first menstruation. According to her (and I checked it myself) the first menstruation tends to be very close to the date of our birthday, curious is not it? This is a very important moment, is when you stop being a child and get a hold of your power as a woman-cyclic. If you are near other women who are in this process of recognition, make a party and celebrate that day as if it were your birthday.
It is also interesting to observe the moon. It is our great ally, as a sister/mother/friend/daughter who accompanies us and supports us. Investigá about your cycles, learn from it. You can even make your rhythm adjust to yours. For example, putting a certain intention, you can achieve overlap your stage of ovulation with the full moon or the new moon. You’re going to see that is not the same one that the other, its influence on us is very large.
